History
A planned community built around a championship course
Piper Glen was master-planned in the mid-1980s on land in what was then the rural edge of southern Mecklenburg County, well before the Ballantyne corridor grew up beside it. The developers organised the community around a championship golf course rather than treating golf as an amenity added later, and they commissioned Arnold Palmer's design practice to lay it out.[1, 2]
The course opened in 1988. It is operated today as TPC Piper Glen, part of the PGA TOUR's TPC network of clubs. From 1990 to 2001 it hosted the senior tour's PaineWebber Invitational, later renamed the Home Depot Invitational — the period when Piper Glen became widely known beyond Charlotte.[3]
Homes followed in phases through the late 1980s, the 1990s and into the 2000s, laid out as a series of individually named residential sections — among them Glynmoor Lakes, Keswick, Linkside Village, Greenhurst and Old Course. Brick and stone elevations, pitched roofs, generous setbacks and mature planting give the community its consistent character, reinforced by covenants and architectural review. Why the name matters
The TPC name ties the club to the PGA TOUR's network of owned and licensed clubs. For buyers, the practical point is different: the club and the residential community are separate. TPC Piper Glen: golf as the organizing principle
The golf course at Piper Glen is the community's spine. It determines property values, sight lines, walking routes, and even the social calendar. Homes on the course command premiums because buyers are not merely purchasing a house; they are purchasing a view that changes with the seasons and a front-row seat to the rhythm of the club.
Palmer routed the course through Piedmont parkland — tree-lined fairways, gentle elevation changes and water in play on several holes — so that it tests stronger players from the back tees while remaining enjoyable from the forward ones. Section names are a starting point, not a verdict. What separates two houses is the specific lot — its orientation, depth, relationship to the course or water, and any easements — along with the home's vintage and how well it has been renovated. Piper Glen is an established resale market rather than a new-construction development. For families considering independent schools, Providence Day, Charlotte Latin and Charlotte Country Day are within a reasonable drive, along with several faith-based schools. The country club is not the only outlet for children. The neighborhood streets are quiet and walkable, with cul-de-sacs that become natural gathering places. Swim team, junior golf, tennis clinics, and holiday events — through the club for members, and through local leagues and programs for everyone — give children a ready social network. Piper Glen residents do not need to travel far for daily necessities. Grocery, retail, dining and medical services are clustered along Rea Road and in the neighbouring Ballantyne area, a short drive away.
