What the corridor is
Four Mile Creek Greenway is a paved, shared-use trail in the Mecklenburg County greenway system, following the Four Mile Creek stream corridor through South Charlotte. Like most Charlotte greenways, it was built in phases and continues to be extended and connected to neighbouring corridors, which is why any fixed description of its length or endpoints goes stale quickly. The county publishes the authoritative map.
For Piper Glen residents, its value is straightforward: a continuous, traffic-free surface for walking, running, and cycling within a short drive, in a part of Charlotte where most routes otherwise share pavement with cars.
What the trail is like
The greenway runs low, close to the creek, with hardwood canopy over much of its length and boardwalk sections where the path crosses wetter ground. That geometry produces a few practical characteristics worth knowing before your first visit:
- Shade. Tree cover makes summer use far more tolerable than a sidewalk route, and it is why the trail is busiest on humid mornings.
- Gentle grade. Creek corridors are naturally flat, which suits strollers, casual cyclists, and anyone building distance.
- Weather sensitivity. Low-lying sections near the creek can flood or collect debris after heavy rain, and the county closes segments when they do.
- Seasonality. Leaf cover changes both the light and the sightlines; the corridor feels considerably more open from late autumn through early spring.
Access and parking
Access is via public trailheads maintained by Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, each with its own parking and posted hours. Rather than reproduce a list that will drift out of date, we recommend pulling up the county's official greenway map before you go — it shows current trailheads, open segments, and any active closures. Trailhead lots fill on weekend mornings and on the first mild weekends of spring.
Etiquette on a shared-use path
The greenway carries walkers, runners, cyclists, dog walkers, and strollers on the same pavement. Keep right, pass left, and call your pass — blind curves near creek crossings are where most conflicts happen. Dogs must be leashed under county rules, and picking up after them is what keeps a wooded corridor pleasant to share. Posted rules at each trailhead take precedence over anything written here.
Walking inside Piper Glen
Day to day, plenty of movement happens without leaving the neighborhood. Piper Glen's street network is curvilinear and low-traffic by design, with sidewalks in many sections and mature canopy overhead — the reason early-morning and evening walking is such a visible part of community life.
